Jennifer’s Body

Megan Fox is a man eater. Quite literally in this recent film that sees her in the leading role. She plays cheerleader Jennifer who is one of the “popular kids” in high school and best friends with the more dorky character Needy, played by Amanda Seyfried. It is made clear from the start that Jennifer is a flirtatious man eater who has many liasons with boys at her school This, ironically, moves from being metaphorical to literal after a satanic ritual goes wrong.

If you want fame and glory sacrifice a virgin, not Jennifer. A succubus is a woman possessed by a demon and who is doomed to feed on human flesh to satisfy the beast within. Put two and two together and it becomes apparent that Jennifer is now craving male flesh in a completely different manner. She is no longer just “high school evil”.

The film itself is not particularly thought provoking but it is entertaining. The screenplay and comical undertones mirror Joss Whedon’s style of writing: the feel of certain scenes reminded me of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and witty one liners of Angel.

Needy is effectively the heroine. The nerd taking on the beauty could be considered as a literal representation of the roles of these stereotypes in high school. She is the one who has to confront and bring down Jennifer: made even more so after Jennifer eats her boyfriend. Needy definitely toughens up, which prooves handy after she is committed to a mental institution.

When one of those days comes along where you don’t want to think too hard, this is the kind of film you want to watch. Not over complicating the plot was the right move with this film, plus Megan Fox prooves to suit this role well.
